Littoral deposits do not occur only on the shores of present-day waterways, you can find them in all those areas, that have been on water level or under it since the last ice age. Similar forces that form the present-day deposits formed also the ancient littoral deposits.
Ancient littoral deposits are clearer and larger than their present-day equivalents. This is explained by extreme physical conditions in ancient times. For example, open seas were winder and thus also winds were stronger.
